What is a waterless car wash?
A waterless car wash is a spray-on, wipe-off cleaner that lets you wash your car anywhere, without a hose, a bucket or any runoff.
Aero Cosmetics created the first one in San Antonio in 1987. That year, new federal water rules banned washing aircraft and vehicles with water at sites like San Antonio International Airport unless the runoff was contained. Our founder developed a spray-on, wipe-off formula so cleaning could continue without water.
Later that year he combined it with the first water-based spray wax, creating the first waterless wash and wax. Today that formula is Wash Wax ALL: it cleans and leaves a slick, UV-protective wax coating in one step.
How waterless car wash works
Wash Wax ALL lubricates the finish and surrounds the dirt so it lifts off instead of grinding in. What keeps it safe is the method we invented with it in 1987: Damp Towel first, Dry Towel second.
The damp towel is not thirsty, so the dirt stays wet all the way into the towel. Skip it, and a dry towel dries the solution and leaves dry dirt, then drags it across your finish. Dry dirt can scratch. Wash Wax ALL was formulated for the Damp Towel, Dry Towel method. Most other products skip the damp towel.
- Prep your towelsFold microfiber towels in half twice to form a square. Wet some with water or Wash Wax ALL and wring them out so they are only damp. Keep others dry.
- SpraySpray Wash Wax ALL on an area about 2 ft by 4 ft or smaller.
- Damp towelWipe with the damp towel. It keeps the dirt wet and pulls it into the towel instead of dragging it across your finish. Turn to a clean side as it gets dirty.
- Dry towelDry with a clean, dry towel before the area dries on its own, leaving a waxed, streak-free finish.
Is waterless car wash safe on paint?
Yes, when the surface is free of mud, sand and road salt. Wash Wax ALL is non-abrasive, pH neutral and safe on all clear-coat finishes. It's formulated to lift dirt without scratching.
Most scratches come from automatic car washes or dirty towels. Use soft, clean microfiber towels, fold each one in half twice to form a square, and flip or unfold it to a clean side as it gets dirty. If you drop a towel on the ground, switch to a new one.
The Damp Towel Method is what keeps it safe: the damp towel keeps the dirt wet all the way into the towel, so dry dirt is never dragged across your finish.
When to rinse first: after off-road driving, the beach or desert, or salted winter roads. A quick rinse is enough. Then spray Wash Wax ALL on as you dry to wax in the same step.
Waterless, rinseless or wet wash: which to use

Questions people ask
Does waterless car wash really work?
Yes. Wash Wax ALL has been cleaning cars, RVs, boats and aircraft since 1987, and it's trusted by private owners, airlines and the U.S. military. It cleans and leaves a non-stick, UV-protective wax coating in one step, so the car stays cleaner longer and the next wash is easier.
What are the downsides of a waterless car wash?
It isn't meant for heavy mud, sand or road salt, which should be rinsed off first. On hot surfaces, work in smaller sections and use a damp towel so the product doesn't dry before you wipe it.
Does waterless car wash scratch paint?
Not when used as directed. Wash Wax ALL is non-abrasive and formulated to lift dirt without scratching. Use clean, soft microfiber towels and rinse off mud, sand or road salt first.
What is the best waterless car wash?
Look for one that both cleans and protects, is safe on every surface, and comes with a proven method. Wash Wax ALL was the first waterless car wash, meets Boeing and Airbus cleaning specifications, and leaves wax protection that lasts up to 6 months.
How much Wash Wax ALL does it take to wash a car?
About 4 to 6 oz for a midsize car, so a 16.9 oz bottle covers about three washes. For bigger jobs, the gallon and concentrates cost less per wash.
Can I waterless wash in direct sunlight?
Yes. Sunlight doesn't affect how it works. If the surface is hot to the touch, use a damp towel after spraying to cool the area, work in smaller sections, and dry it before it dries on its own.
